06 February, 2025 No commentAre gymnasts at a higher risk for eating disorders?
Yes! Gymnasts are at a higher risk of developing eating disorders compared to the real population and even athletes in other sports. Such risk factor is include emphasis on aesthetics and body shape, weight categories and pressures to remain thin, early specialization where they start to train to at a very early age, performance and personally pressures with an emphasis on perfectionism with their routines, in addition to their coaches teaching styles that may put emphasis on weight, food and body size.
Signs may include but are not limited to rapid weight loss, obsession with weight, unhealthy eating patterns, eating large amounts of food in one sitting, purging behaviors, mood swings, avoidance of social situations, secretive eating, performance decline and wearing baggy clothes to name a few.
Treatment for eating disorders in gymnastics include regular medical monitoring, therapy, and nutrition rehabilitation with a member of our Branz Nutrition team to focus on developing a balanced eating plan that supports bone health and athletic performance.
Not to mention, we want to work with the athletes coach to educate them on signs and symptoms of the eating disorder acting up and how to support their athlete through recovery to continue to prioritize health and wellbeing over weight and performance.
Branz Nutrition Counseling is a team of certified eating disorder dietitians who provide compassionate care to those struggling with their relationship to food. Our approach is weight-inclusive, LGBTQIA+, and social justice-oriented, which means that we believe that everyone deserves access to quality care.
